Every April 7th the World Health Day. On this date it is about commemorating the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization. To do this, each year, the agency chooses a topic on which to focus and attract attention.

In 2017, the WHO has chosen as its theme: depression. It can affect anyone: children and adults; of any age and the consequences for those who suffer from it and those around them are dire.

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 300 million people in the world live with depression. The lack of support that sufferers receive leads to their inability to access the necessary treatment to live a healthy life.

Depression is not an adult disorder, it also affects children, adolescents, men and women, people of different conditions and different races.

We can suspect that a child has depression when there are clear signs in his behavior. It is important not to confuse a temporary state of sadness with real depression that goes through:

- The child is always sad and cries easily.

- He is apathetic and has no interest in playing, being with friends or going to school.

- Have low self-esteem.

- Presents a state of fatigue, boredom and low energy and concentration.

- Sleep little and bad.

- You have a poor appetite.

- Is irritable or very sensitive to small obstacles. Easily frustrated.

- High level of anxiety.

- He talks about leaving home and even mentions suicide on occasion.

It is not enough for the child to have one of these symptoms to call what happens to him / her depression, there must be a significant change in behavior and show several of these behaviors. And, of course, it has to be diagnosed by an expert.

Depression does not have to be an inherited disorder, unless it is endogenous depression. Generally, it is caused by the parenting model, the experiences that the child lives and the environment in which it develops.

How is childhood depression treated? In both children and adults, experts say that the most effective therapy is cognitive-behavioral therapy, according to some even more than pharmacological, since the behaviors and ideas that feed depression are broken and the child is taught to be able to cope to anything that distresses, worries, or causes depression.
